Bafana outplayed, outthought and beaten

Posted: Jun 16 2010

Diego Forlan and his strike partner Luis Suarez produced sterling performances to help Uruguay beat Bafana Bafana 3-0 at the Loftus stadium on Wednesday night.

The South Americans were on the offensive from the start. Bafana skipper Aaron Mokoena's challenge on Luis Suarez, which appeared dubious, was a sign of bad things to come for Bafana. From the resultant set piece Steven Pienaar became the first player on the night to go into referee Massimo Busacca's book when 'Schillo' charged out early and stopped the shot with his hand, but a retake by Diego Forlan was blocked to safety by Siphiwe Tshabalala.

Suarez was back in the picture in the eighth minute when his shot went wide just to Itumeleng Khune's right, but it was too far off target.

The pressure game finally paid off for Forlan and company in the 24th minute when the former Manchester United striker's shot from on the edge of the box deflected Mokoena giving Khune no chance.

South Africa's half chance fell to Katlego Mphela in the 40th minute. Teko Modise put in a decent cross for ‘Killer', but the latter saw his header go over the bar.

For the better part of the first half Bafana failed to once break the Uruguayan defence and the La Celeste certainly deserved their 1-0 lead going into the break.

Uruguay continued where they left off in the first half. Suarez, the Ajax Amsterdam striker, weaved his way into the box in the 52nd minute and was brought down by Tsepo Masilela, but the referee waved play on, when it could easily have been a penalty. Aware of Uruguay's dominance Bafana coach Carlos Alberto Parreira hauled off Reneilwe Letsholonyane and brought in Surprise Moriri.

However, the surprise was to be provided by the Uruguayans in the 76th minute when Suarez went down under a challenge from Khune and the referee pointed to the spot. The Kaizer Chiefs goalie received marching orders and Pienaar came off to make way for Moeneeb Josephs. Forlan stabbed home from the penalty spot to hand Uruguay a 2-0 lead and some Bafana supporters got off their seats to leave, but they missed the last goal for Uruguay.

In time added on Uruguay put the final nail in the coffin. Forlan played an inch perfect pass to Suarez out wide on the right and Suarez's cross lobbed Josephs for Alvaro Pereira to head into an empty net and 3-0 it finished.

Nigeria 0 Argentina 1; South Africa 0 Uruguay 3. The difference is no doubt clear. South Africa is on the verge of a first round elimination. If this happens, this will be the first time for a host country. Not even the USA (though not known for football as at 1994) could create such an unenviable record. South Africans should stop making noise and drawing unnecessary comparisons.

Teko Modise is useless he has not had a good game for Bafana since well before last years Confederation Cup. I blame him for giving us nothing in the midfield.

What a disapointment. We played so slow as if we were winning. No sense of urgency.

I dont think the penalty was valid though. it should have been an offside.

Now what?. Beat France? Please!

Zwilithini: 2010-06-16 22:38

Wow what a disappointment....we didn't play at all the midlfield was no where to be found i guess Parreira and his boys learn a big lesson in this game and as for the red cards i think referee was harsh as the Uruguay player was clear offside......hard lucky Boys!!!!!

Yoseph : 2010-06-16 22:42

I dont what was the faul concerng the second goal the red card for the goal keeper, the refree has to be used by the Urguay's . I dont get it. RSA , they were not that much good to win the gane but was not as bad as for to loose to the counter part for nill.

thembile : 2010-06-16 22:43

Finally the HORROR is over I remember being criticizd for not being a patriot and told i should migrate, in truth SA is just adding numbers to the world cup we were embarrassed in front of the whole world disappointing. PARREIRA took us for a serious ride,Bafana players enjyd talking to media thnking they are stars. As the saying goes FEEL IT,ITS HERE,we sure felt it.

Ike : 2010-06-16 22:43

Our brazilian coach is just here to make money .stuck with one formation, useless players:mokoena, modise pinaar.the best thing they know is back pass or falling.anyway we are just playing in wc by virtue of being the host.all the dreams and ambitions stops today

Eric: 2010-06-16 22:48

The world cup is for men and not for the boys. This is why I do not blame coaches that go for experienced players. Look at the whole lot of difference Diego Forlan made to the game. Who knows Benny could have made the difference for South Africa.
This is also a lesson for some south africans that come to kick off nigeria to wish Nigeria badluck. It is uncalled for and I wish South Africans should get behind Nigeria and the other africans.

Edmilson: 2010-06-16 22:49

Naija folks, pls let's not gloat over SA's loss. Imagine how we feel when the Super Eagles get eliminated.

I feel sad for SA although all hope is not lost. SA must improve dramatically though - because I dont think they are currently able to handle teams with big names like France.

Biggest disappointment was to see SA fans leave in droves more than 10 minutes before the end. That was poor and the fans should know better.

mphahleni: 2010-06-16 22:50

its obvious not questionable..i have always said mzanzi will loose to Uruguay and france and they will be the last team on the group with one goul and one point

what did bafana bafana smoke be4 the game mara he?because they looked very high, they were playing in slowmotion no sence of egency, they were playing as if they dont want to score, they just wanted to nock the ball around, and wait for uruguay to attack, the dream is over phillip is gone.

When RSA played Mexico. Nigerians supported them. I was disappointed to see SA fans suppoting Argentina against Nigeria. Why do you people hate Nigerians that much.

Because you drew Mexico you thought you have arrived.
I had vowed not to support SA after you turned ur support in favour of Argentina. I am celebrating your 3-0 bassshhiiinggg in the hands of Uruguay.

No way back for your Banana Banana because you don't have what it takes to be in a FIFA world Cup in the first place.U didn't even qualify for the last AFCON.I mean what is a team ranked 88 doing in a round of top 32?

Emeka  : 2010-06-16 23:14

Thank god i did'nt watch the match, let us hope the super eagles will not dissapoint me tomorrow.UP SUPER EAGLES!!

Our coach failed us with defnsv system, we are one goal down at halftime, why he didn't put Parker and Nomvete for Modise and Shaba u got nothing to loss But why why why coach. For these kwerez I told u after the world cup mabasetshenzwe we have 2 make sure their are going back where abavela khona lezinJa

tshepo : 2010-06-16 23:14

im a very realistic south african. I have fought my compatriots because of that. Firstly, we severely lack quality. More especially on the last third. This brings us down to main issue- development. U see miracles dont exist in this beautiful game. I still believe we can only beat new zealand and hondurus in this cup. Anyway lets enjoy the festival. We should stop hallucinatin. There is no quick success in this world. 5 months of preparation? Then u think u have produced quality. This is a 10 year project, mates. Anyway if we want to do well in 2018 lets start developin boys now. Teach real professional football. 2014? We a already late my friends. As for other african teams, atleast quality is there, but oh my god i dont see them all doin well cause there is pathologically lack of discipline and that that that professionalism. I rest my case.

Dont blame the coach, the players let the country down. We were on an unbeaten streak with the same players. The players didnt pitch. Shocking performance. Teko is riding on a wave. I felt that the players now think they have just arrived , chatting 2 the media and thinking they huge stars, especially Tshabbalala.

Dobson: 2010-06-16 23:24

These guys were surely not playing for the nation, they were just aiming for a quick goal to add to their R43000s they hav already in the bag, they surely had no tempo to win the match. They were such a disgrace to watch, it was maybe going to be better had I heard the result from the radio and not watch them play. Kak play it was. But for any hope of advancing, lets hope France and Mexico play to a draw tommorrow so that all the 4 teams have their destiny in their own hands come the last day of the group.

leponapona: 2010-06-16 23:24

well this match goes to show you that luck plays an important role in the outcome of games. The first goal by Forlan was a bit freaky. The ball hit the back of a Mbazo captain mooooo, took off straight up, and then dipped right into goal, second goal dupias penalty, the rest is history come 2014 we will be a better team.

Emeka  : 2010-06-16 23:26

Apart from steven pienaar of everton.i don't think the rest of the players have perfomed anything.from the coaching staff to the so called bananas they should be flogged. .UP SUPER EAGLES!!

@Sabelo, you are a son of an orangutan! Instead of hiding your f.u.c.king head in shame, you are again vomiting nonsense about Nigerians. Did you just realized how much pain and disgrace your low life team has caused Africans?
What can you do motherf.u.c.ker? Bring it on!!. You'll be the first dead meat in this world cup. Get a life you piece of s.h.i.t.

Nkosia : 2010-06-16 23:57

Its very simple,we dont have a team.We were lucky against Mexico and the chickens have come home to roost. Its better for the boys to get knocked out before they cause us more heartache in knockout stages.Talking with British accent on the media by our boys is not equalls to producing results on the field of play.A national disgrace.

sonny: 2010-06-17 00:03

I am going to encourage my South African brothers that all is not lost, you can still beat france an qualify.
I am also going to use the Martin Luther King Jnr approach, and not the Malcolm X approach being used by some of my fellow Nigerians, to appeal to you to stop this hatred of Nigerians. Why can't the whole of Africa unite for once.

Luckybouy-Tiego : 2010-06-17 00:10

Ja, exuses won't work! Bafana Bafana thought our support to them would win them the game. They had no sense of urgency, no purpose, nothing, FOKOL... It seems the World Cup stage is way too big for us... It's back to the drawing board for 2014, if we can qualify.

Uche: 2010-06-17 00:25

Bafana Banana suckks, sorrry asss team. How can you host the world cup and play like pigs. What a waste of African spot.

Anyways they couldn't have qualified for the WC if they are not the host. I had always known that they will suckk big time when the real game comes.

How can someone come all the way from south america and kick your behind in your house, bafana banana has absoultely no chance in the second stage of this tournament, bunch of mediocre players running around like chickens with heads cut off

i stand wit u on that sonny, this hatred thing between my nigerian brothers and south african counterpart is just not necessary. we should learn to tolerate each other and see how we can have strong continent. about the game, its quite unfortunate things are turning out this way but that's football for you. not like they were the better side of the day. they were just lucky to a diego forlan on thier side that have them the lead. that was an individual effort not a team thing. lets just hope for a better luck against france and see if we can scale through. GOD BLESS NIGERIA, GOD BLESS R.S.A, GOD BLESS AFRICA

well although im disappointed that we lost bt i wasnt surprised. I mean if u guys recall at what i said when the final squad was announced i did hint that Parreira wud rely on out of form Modise, erratic Mokoena and slow like snail Moriri. Even if we won ystday i wud still b nt convinced with our formation. Mphela jst becomes a loner upfrnt with abt 3 defenders on him. He needs a pacey partner like Nomvethe to terrorise defence. In a game against France Nomvethe shud start to neutralise Evra frm overlapping. Bt i knw that wont happen since Pitso has hs favourites aboTeko naboMoriri

mbuso: 2010-06-17 07:15

Plz foreigners nigerian brothers dont start trouble. Coming to the game: Modise is useless, Pienaar also useless, falling now and then,Mbazo must be dropped in the next game. This wasnt the team i know, maybe it under 12 boys. DISAPPOINTED

Bafana Bafana are useless. The Referee was biased, that wasnt a foul instead it was off-side. I somewhat believe that we are not great, we were not even in the game for the whole 90 minutes. We didnt have possession of the ball, we were dull. Bafana Bafana must not bank their hopes on other team results, they are out.

Bafana Bafana was totally outplayed and quiet an embarrassment to the continent. The problem is that you overrate yourselves instead of being cool before the game. There is no way you can beat France and obviously your team is the candidate for early exit from the tournament.BB were getting more confused when the reach the goal of the opponents why?Egypt would have done Africa proud.Go back to the drawing board and stop talking too much!!!!

It was African world Cup but SA was busy supporting Argentina's during Nigeria and Argentina match and what can you say.....we still Love SA to qualify so that the game will continue to be sweet..ONE LOVE AFRICA AND PLEASE SOUTH AFRICANS DON'T EVER COMPARE URSELF WITH NIGERIANS ALTHOUGH WE HAVE A VERY BAD GOVT AND IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SOCCER AND ASK UR FORE-FATHERS THEY WILL TELL YOU MORE...I STILL LOVE SA NOR-MATTER WHAT.

We need to learn from our mistakes in that game and go forward! A couple of changes in the line-up is imperative, given the way we played. I suggest that Siyabonga Nomvete and Katlego Mphela should start against the ageing France. From uManqoba Gumede

Svai: 2010-06-17 08:35

Guys tone it down. We don't need this African rivalry between Nigeria and South Africa now. The majority of Nigerians were cheering for South Africa in this match just like the majority of us were cheering for Nigeria against Argentina. Let's not be dissuaded from supporting each other by a few hotheads. Let's keep our cool and support Nigeria again when they are playing. let's ignore the hotheads.

On yesterday's match, BB played crap. They played like they didn't want to win but to keep possession of the ball. They played like underdogs that they are. You would expect a host nation to attack but our boys are there to defend. The coach substituted our best player on the day reneilwe leaving behind a highly selfish Tshabalala and the ever ineffective Modise. Tshabalala seemed to play for himself maybe the goal against Mexico got to his head. I must say it seems like these boys must pack their bags in preparation for leaving the expensive hotel they are staying in. They can always watch the cup on TV as well.

Svai: 2010-06-17 08:38

Country 5: 2010-06-17 08:12,

Again, the majority of South Africans supported Nigeria. You even had a Nigerian singing in the opening ceremony. What more do you want? Do you want us to force everybody in the country to support Nigeria? That is not possible. Not even everybody in your country supports the national team. Just like not everybody in SA is behind Bafana-Bafana.

SANDILE: 2010-06-17 08:46

Yes BAFANA BAFANA lost but mark my words NIGERIA will not only qualify to the next round but will lose all their group matches ......what a shame is going to be to all these big mouth and big dicks Nigerians....cant wait for Greece to beat them this afternoon. Please do not get me wrong I have nothing against Nigerians,it is just that I hate them with all my heart and each time I tryto accomodate them in my system I just fail and sad part of they are now scattered all over our country.

KaMashobana: 2010-06-17 08:51

Lets simple admit that we do NOT have players to compete at that level. Secondly Perreira is useless, no wonder last time he was fired by Saudi Arabia after the 2nd game(thereby watching the 3rd game on TV.)He has stuck with Modise who is NOT performing.Benni & Morris should have been in the world cup. Finally Vuvuzelas wont score or defend goals!!!!!!!!!!!

Wizzy : 2010-06-17 08:51

SA was very disappointing to say the least. They were trying to come out busy but really, all the passing didn't mean anything because they never threatened. Uruguay always looked strong, comfortable and in control of the match.
SA, well, that team is too ordinary and is incapable of competing favourably at such a high level. Players like Modise are just good for the psl, when push comes to shuv, his always been a huge disaapointment. I wonder why the coach never substitutted him all made use of all his 3 substitutes even before the red card. SA didn't offer anything going forward. Defense wise, Mokoena has always been the weakest link...

WekwaChoga: 2010-06-17 10:53

AFRICA UNITE .... my heart bleeds when I read the amount of hate speech among fellow african brothers and sisters on this site ... we are all black and our boarders came from colonial rulers, why so much hate speech? Lets be objective and provide positive criticism. One luv Africa, one peace on inity ... black supremecy mi chant. I support all african nations and the bafana loss hurt me too but i certainly think Mbazo should go he was responsible for the goal against Mexico when he covered an offside and same happened yesterday. Morris deserves a place in the team .... there was no mobility yesterday, no midfield supporting both the defence and attack. We need to keep possession with a goal in mind not passing the ball just to keep it in our defence and not threaten the opposition.....Please stop this hatred, stop name calling, we are one nation, it makes the imperialists happy to see black brothers divided what are we teaching our children by this, what lesson is being passed onto the youth of today ... makwerekwere this makwerekwere that .... I feel sorry for your offspring .... Jah luv, guide n protect Africa and its children!!!

salazani: 2010-06-17 17:42

The roar before the storm, I guess what we feared has come to pass. It could be unrealistic to expect miracles from this South african side. They tried their best, but sadly, their best is not good enough at this level. Remember, this is the team that failed to even qualify to the Africa cup. South Africa has had great teams, this certainly is not one of them. But I know, this is just a bad patch like many other countries go through.

All is not lost. To my South African pals, guys, enjoy this PARTY. Remember the bulk of your neighbours in the rest of the continent will never experience what you have, go on and enjoy the rest of the tornament.
