Amoah backs Suarez's actions

African powerhouse Ghana impressed with some strong performances at the 2010 World Cup, but their tournament came to an abrupt halt in the quarter-finals when they lost to Uruguay on penalties.

Uruguay attacker Luis Suarez’s handball in the dying seconds of the game, thus denying Ghana a clear goal, was one of the most controversial moments of the World Cup, and the Ajax striker has had his fair share of criticism ever since.

However, Ghanaian international Matthew Amoah has now stepped up to defend the attacker's actions.

“A lot of people have asked me whether I'm angry with Suarez, but I'm not. I perfectly understand what he did and I would probably have done the same,” said Amoah to Dutch newspaper BN/De Stem.

“We can only blame ourselves for not converting the spot-kick [Asamoah Gyan missed after Suarez had been sent off]. That's the reason why we didn't make it to the semi-finals.”

Amoah also took the time to discuss Ghana's overall performance at the World Cup.

“I'm very proud with what we achieved in South Africa. We've made a lot of people very happy by reaching the quarter-finals. We were received like heroes when we returned to Ghana. That was an amazing experience.”

And you call yourself a professional mr Amoah???? Do you really promote cheating in the beautiful game??? You are such a looser.....

Ah this guy, is a disappointment!! As a professional as you claim to be how can you justify a cheating behaviour like what Suarez did?? You have just betrayed yourself Man!!

What Suarez did is not cheating, free kicks, penalties, and fouls are part of the game. i would have agreed with you "Chris" if the referee didnt award a penalty, but since Ghana got the spot kick I think everything was well within the football laws. If i have to define cheating " in 2003 chiefs was playing against Santos and Arthur Zwane stopped a goal bound attempt deliberately using his hand, and the ref did give a penalty. That scenario is closest to cheating. I'M OUT!!

I perfectly agree with Amoah,n i think is time we work on the attackers.Amoah didn`t get much playing time during the mundel n its bad.He is ghanas` best forward of all time scoring hundred goals in the dutch league.What on earth was the coach doing wit him on bench?Had we gotten Amoah up front,things will va gone better.I respect the player n wish him all the best

In egpyt, South africans and Ghanaians were cheering for USA over Nigeria. I saw ghanaians cheering for south korean to win over Nigeria in the world.Africa really got a problem if football is a source of jealousy instead of cohesion.But i have never seen a Nigerian fan cheer for a non African team to win over an African team, no true African should do that. go Falconet! go Nigeria,go Africa.

Amoah, nobody is denying the fact that, the referee did his job right after Suarez had punched-out the goal bound goal, my beef is that, his act was a cheating act, as he did it deliberately period!!! This is surely not 'a fair play act' and must be frowned upon!!

hami-truther, what you saw in Egypt was hardly the case eMzansi. Most Africans, me included were rooting for all African teams. Allegiance to the motherland was evident all over, however people are not ****genous, there will always be those individuals who go their own way. We call it freedom of expression!

well said....suarez was given the worst punishment acrdin to soccer rules....we missed the penalty...shud we blame the goal posts too? ..let it go!
