Sven-Goran Eriksson joins Nigeria jostle

Eriksson joins Nigeria jostle

Posted: 2010-02-11 14:39

Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has formally joined the line-up to take over the vacant job of Nigeria coach.

KickOffNigeria.com understands that a formal letter from Eriksson's agent Athole Still expressing the Swede's interest for the job was received by the Nigeria Football Federation on Tuesday.
Still however, declined to comment on the situation

"I cannot speak on my client's situation at this time," Still told KickOffNigeria.com.

That comment is a marked and telling departure from the last time, a few months ago when Eriksson was mentioned in connection with the job and Still categorically and unequivocally denied that his client was interested.

Guus Hiddink, Louis van Gaal, Hassan Shehata, Ratomir Djukovic, Peter Taylor and Giovanni Trappatoni are the other names under consideration, although van Gaal and Shehata have ruled themselves out of the running, while the Russia football federation spokesman Ilyav Kazakov said his bosses would not release Hiddink to Nigeria.

The NFF have set the end of February to name a new coach, but Still says that would be too late for his client.

"I am not confirming that Eriksson is considering or being considered for the Nigeria job, but he has three major job offers and the end of February would be too late for him."

Tow of those job offers, according to Still, are from World Cup-bound teams.

NFF Executive Committee member Taiwo Ogunjobi, who is at the head of the team coordinating the head hunt for a new coach, also declined comment.

"We don't want to employ coaches on the pages of newspapers," he told KickOffNigeria.com. "We have done enough talking. Now, we want to do our business confidentially and make a decision after our interviews on February 26.

"It is not good for us to keep talking about different people, and it is also not fair to the people we are speaking with."

Its a shame that of all these coaches, indications have shown that they are all only interested to stand on the sidelines in a world cup, rather than do the real job.

Hahahahaa! What a comedy. These merceneries have seen a new piece of property to scramble over. When will we learn not to open ourselves up for this ridiculous farce. It is disgusting! Where were these people when Amodu qualified Nigeria for the WC? With barely 4 months to the WC, and only one FIFA free day inbetween the NFF are still dwdling about allowing AModu/Keshi/Siasia to restructure the team for the WC! This is disgusting! I wish all the Amodu haters and the NFF good luck.

A letter to our ex Head Coach, Otunba, Chief Shuaibu Amodu, OON

Dear Amodu,

How are you? How is our jeep (Kia) and all the money you recieved in the two years of being head coach? I hope you have not shared most of the funds with Ogunjobi and some notable KON forumites?

Please train these ones very well (Dont avoid friendlies and dont pick players on paper). Make Sure you speak out here that you want to pick your players. But please in your liberty, dont pick injured players ahead of fit players. Because of experience and name, please dont pick Garba Lawal, Yekini etc to our Home base eagles ahead of OSanga, Okonkwo etc.

Chief Coach of home based eagles, Please do not call anyone training material so that they will not one day see u too as "preparation" and not tournament material. Try to vist our local league match venue so that you will not always follow what fans say to pick your players.

I could have written more sir but time will not permit me.

In all, we will pray for you to do well in the qualifiers and win CHAN for us.

God bless Amodu.
God Bless Home Based Super Eagles.
God Bless Super Eagles
God Bless Nigeria.

Yours,

ME to YOU

@Olatunbosun

U make me laff.Pls give im more advise,he sure needs it.

And for those asking why NFF invites players for Amodu...they simply dont trust his sense of Judgement. He still attaches the tag,National team coach on his name strictly on sentiments.Otherwise no ambitous club in our league will hire him.If u doubt, let him try.

And let me tell u all now, even if we pick a new coach 4 weeks to the world cup,the least stage Nigeria will get to is the quaterfinals.Mark it!

ATTENTION NFF: I'll like to apply for the vacant coaching position to handle the struggling SE. I have uploadede my resume/CV on your email accounts; so pls review them thorougly and I hope my candidacy will be considered, cuz I want to be at the WC so badly.

Hahaha, I can't stop laughing about NFF short-sighted and undetermined to resist pressure from some ungrateful nigerians to demote Amodu to handle the local SE. What Amodu did wrong was to qualify the nation to two world cups and got eliminated at the SF by the BLACK STARS at the just ended Afcon in Angola. For me, Amodu is the best manager to handle the SE at the WC, since the search for a white skin coach will be of no use. The facts are clear, no coach can satisfy the demands of nigerian fans.......period. I only pity whoever accepts the offer to manage the indiscipline players, who only sacrifice for their respective clubs at the expense of their nation. I wish and pray that, who ever receives the mantle to oversee the team will instill discipline and teawork to the team; otherwise the whole SE must be overhaul to brin gin new and young players. These players are bunch of lazy and proud when it comes to national assignment. It happens in most African countries. I always admire the Egyptian coach for sticking with the local plyers, and they have always performed incredible.

I can only wish NFF good luck for their search of a new manager. It's sad they have bowed to pressure to demote Amodu.

ken gadaffi: 2010-02-11 17:39

Na wa o o o , all dick and harry will be involved in the SE JOB.... I read they are going to london to meet with the coaches invited for interview.

Why going to london? Are we begging them for a job or what?
Arent they suppose to come to Nigeria for the interview?
All these people are only after their pocket and it really piss me off to see that they are now using the call by the fans for sacking AMODU to achieve their aim. Hmmmmmmmmmmm AGENTS at work...

MAY GOD SAVE NIGERIA

@TONY, I agree with you in totality.

AMODU may not have been the best coach, but with him and other local coaches like KESHI/SIASIA/RUFAI, we stand a better chance than any of the so called foreign coaches being touted.

Not only is the time too short, this coaches are not really as good as they are being hyped.

Well time shall tell.

sly1: 2010-02-11 18:48

Tony and Danarchy4 since we are so myopic in looking for coaches who could not qualify their teams to take us to the World Cup, how come no country, not even Niger, is beating down the doors of NFF to loan them Amodu? Since we are so ungrateful, why is it that nobody else wants him?

My friends, a good product sells itself.

The reason those matches won by Amodu don't count for much is because we are supposed to win those teams. In the just concluded Afcon, we beat Mozambigue, Benin and A DEPLETED Algeria. Against a well organized Ghana and Egypt we failed woefully. We failed to score in over 230 minutes of knock out stage soccer. If Amodu had met and beaten Cameroun or Ivory Coast, he will be a hero today. But we all know we were lucky to have gone so far in that tourney. Amodu has lost the respect of his players. Amodu has lost the respect of the NFF. More important is that he has lost the respect and good will of Nigerians. If he sits on a Nigerian bench again, it will be clear HE IS BEING IMPOSED ON US.

Is it not obvious to you now that the reason Amodu does not like friendlies is because he is scared to LOSE. Can you imagine playing teams like Mozambique in Nigeria with 4 defenders and Ayila, Ajilore and Olofinjana in defensive midfield. So when you add the keeper 8 out of 11 are primarily concerned with defending in a MUST WIN MATCH

RUBBISH!!!. Men, get a club and hire him. We don't need him anywhere near any of our national teams, including the females

shola: 2010-02-11 18:59

WHAT IS BORDERING ME IS THAT SOME PEOPLE STILL TALK ABOUT AMODU WHEN THE MAN HIMSELF IS NOT COMPLAINING ABOUT IS POSITION NOW. IF HE IS SO GOOD WE WILL FIND OUT WITH THE LOCAL PLAYERS THEY GAVE HIM.

@Austin, Danarchy4, Garvey, Ken gadaffi and other pro Amodus, u guys are wayward people, ur various comments here has depicted ur level of reasoning so it will useless for any body with common sense to be arguing with u people. I think u should ask Amodu for more money so that u guys can take his image branding to higher level(hissed). Anyway, in case u don't know, Amodu(your BOSS) issue is long gone and forgotten, what is on ground now is how to persuade the NFF to get a good TA to work with siasia for the worldcup. If you want to join this campaign, u are welcome if not keep quiet and stop making silly and irritating comments.

Olatunbosun: 2010-02-11 19:54

@Tony, It amazes me when people will want to crucify every one that has a point to raise against Amodu. People have called the likes of Okocha, Odegbami, Ikpeba etc different names for pointing to the numerous weaknesses of Amodu.

If you listen to interviews and gather news from various sources, you would have listened to many of the players complaining about the tactics of the coach. Players like Osaze, Kanu, Taiwo, Martins have at different times made their mind known. Eneramo of recent begged for fairness in selection of players. What does that suggest? I am not Eneramos fan but are w saying he would not have been more hungry and fit than players like Yak.

Are all these players crying over sour grapes? Is this the first time that a coach will pull out Osaze and why is it now that he is voicing out? How many players recieved more man of the match than Osaze in the last one yr? To you, now he is running around because he has expressed what many players had held in thier heart for so long.

Let us be plain and objective in our claims.

Why we build super Eagles of today, lets us also see in the super eagles a team that can give hope for the future.

God Bless Nigeria!

sly1: 2010-02-11 21:47

Tony congratulations on winning in France. You seem to forget that the main reason for the victory was because Amodu's favourite players did not show up. So, he had to make do with what was available. Those fringe players like Sodje, Aluko and Eneramo were fighting for a place in the team. Just a week before that game, Eneramo had claimed he will never play for the eagles again because your super coach did not include him in his list. He turned out to be the one who scored the goal against Ireland. That was the same way Amodu dropped Obasi and he was the star of the Nigerian team against Egypt.

If Amodu had played France with his favourite players like NWANERI,YOBO,MOHAMMED and YAKUBU you know what the result would have been. So why did he not take that team to Angola. Do you want to blame me for a coach that chose his final list for a championship without even one training session.

Men, please admit it Amodu is Mr Bad DECISIONS. He is simply DAFT= ODEH= OLODO= OBOLO

Resign now, Dudu-Orumen tells Lulu, others

Kazeem Busari

A former member of the Nigeria Football Federation Technical Committee, Godwin Dudu-Orumen, has called on the NFF President, Sani Lulu, and other officials to resign following the failure of coach Shaibu Amodu to lead the Super Eagles to the Nations Cup final.

Sani Lulu

advertisement

Dudu-Orumen said, "The Eagles' performance at the Nations Cup was uninspiring and a confirmation of Amodu's lack of capacity for the job.

"Now that the NFF has sholved him aside, they should resign. After all, they promised to sink and swim with him. They should sink with him now if they have honour.

"There has never been a coordinated move by the federation to develop our football. I bet they have not made contact with any of the coaches they have shortlisted to coach the Eagles.

"I have made my research in Europe and I discovered that none of these big name coaches is ready to work in Nigeria. It is insulting for the NFF to shortlist these coaches before contacting them.

"The NFF is an unserious band of self-serving people who will do everything to stay in control without moving Nigerian football forward."

Dudu-Orumen said he would not blame the players for winning bronze at the Nations Cup, insisting that they could not have performed better because Amodu could not raise their game.

Amodu is not the problem in nigeria footbal, not even NFF. The country leadership is the problem and came down to every sector of the country. Should we be talking of getting "white man" for SE at time when we have competent hand available in Siasia around?

Africans are still opressed whether we like it or not. No African nation will ever win the Soccer World Cup because we do not believe in our on people. These European coaches they come in Africa to make money not to win W/Cup for our nations. If were one of these FA administrators I would hide my face in shame.
