Netherlands stun Brazil
Posted: Jul 2 2010
The Netherlands have stunned 10-man Brazil with a 2-1 come-from-behind victory in the quarterfinals of the 2010 World Cup at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Friday afternoon.
Brazil could have been 3-0 up by halftime, but instead held a slender 1-0 lead going into the break following Robinho's early strike.
But a Felipo Melo own goal and a Wesley Sneijder header in the second half put the Dutch ahead, and when Brazil had Melo sent-off for an ugly stamp on Arjen Robben, their task got a whole lot harder.
There was drama before kick-off as Joris Mathijsen was injured in the warm-ups and was replaced by Andre Ooijer, and Ooijer was at fault for the opener as he played Robinho onside from a superb Melo pass and the Brazilian finished clinically to give his team the lead.
Juan and Kaka went close for the South Americans before the break, while the Dutch offered little at the other end.
The second half was a different matter though and Netherlands were level on 53 minutes. Sneijder's cross from deep flicked off the head of Felipo Melo and into the goal, with Brazilian goalkeeper Cesar having raced off his line to try and punch clear. It was a defensive calamity for the South Americans.
Brazil looked stunned by the goal and seemed to go into their shell, while the Dutch continued to chip away at them.
And it was 2-1 in 68 minutes, and again Sneijder was involved. He headed home after a flick from Dirk Kuyt following Robben’s corner.
Just four minutes later and Brazil were in deeper trouble when Melo was received a straight red card for an act of stupidity as he stamped on the leg of Robben while he lay on the ground.
From there on in the Brazilians tried to push forward for an equaliser, and in doing so they left massive gaps at the back. Netherlands should have wrapped up the win with another goal, but in the end it was not needed and they recorded a famous victory and set up a semifinal against either Uruguay or Ghana in Cape Town on July 6.
